What can a vulnerability assessment approach do for me?

The assessment approaches developed by ReVA enable decision-makers to view changing environmental conditions from a number of perspectives, ranging from a big picture overview to focused views by stakeholders with varying priorities. There is value in looking at the broad scale, even for local decision making. A broad-scale view provides context for local problems, informing us about the extent of the problems, and helping us to identify how to address them (strategic planning). The broad scale also helps us to focus on where problems may occur in the future, especially those related to broad-scale changes that progress across the landscape, such as land use change, regional air quality, and the spread of exotic pests. These approaches also allow us to identify potential opportunities for improving conditions on the ground. For example, we can identify areas where restoration efforts will best enhance habitat connectivity, thus protecting native migratory species such as birds or mammals. And, perhaps most importantly, these approaches can help us identify where we need to look more closely, allowing us to focus limited resources in areas where we can do the most good.

In this section, we describe several of the assessment approaches, along with examples of how they might be used to assist decision-makers.
